J.C. Penney to close store in Dunkirk

A Dunkirk J.C. Penney is one of 138 locations the department store chain will close across the country as it restructures in the face of changing shopping trends.

The Dunkirk store is the only local J.C. Penney store on list of closures released Friday.

Stores at Walden Galleria, Batavia City Centre, and at the Eastern, McKinley and Boulevard Malls will remain open.

The store is located in the D&F Plaza, 1170 Central Ave., Dunkirk. It will begin liquidating inventory April 17 and close in June. The company said it is working on possible relocation opportunities for some workers and providing outplacement support for others.

The company said the closure of 138 stores across the country will affect 5,000 employees. J.C. Penney is also closing one supply chain facility in Florida and relocating another one in California.

J.C. Penney, like other department stores, has struggled as consumer preferences have changed, shifting dollars away from malls and toward online shopping.
