Letter: Fight against establishment is being lost among dissent

Fight against establishment is being lost among dissent

On one side, American protesters believe President Trump is the one who can change things. Trump was their victory and so they have no need to dissent anymore because they believe they have won. But all that is happening is their “rebel” is turning into – or always was and was just pretending not to be – the old power structure and he is taking his supporters with him into the transition. The other side is having its actual dissent redirected from protests against institutions, economic injustice, racism, etc., toward Trump.

So I would propose that the meaning of Trump has changed. His purpose is to have the protests redirected toward him and, in their redirection, they will be absorbed like a sentence disappearing into its period. If it works, it will be the end of America’s whiny little revolution.
