Abbott enters race for Niagara Legislature seat

CAMBRIA - Jeffrey R. Abbott, a Mercy Flight employee and assistant director of emergency management for the City of North Tonawanda, announced Wednesday he's running for the 10th District seat in the Niagara County Legislature this year.

Abbott, 41, a Democrat, will  challenge Republican David E. Godfrey in the district that includes the towns of Wilson, Cambria and part of Wheatfield.

Abbott is quality improvement manager and a flight paramedic for Mercy Flight, and is a former president of Local 394, International Association of Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics. As a civilian contractor, he was a tactical medic at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan in 2012, the same year he joined Mercy Flight.

He said if he is elected he would seek to improve support for fire companies and emergency services agencies, while seeking to pursue economic development opportunities.

"I am convinced that we need a change in our elected officials to evolve and meet the expectations of hardworking taxpayers," Abbott said. "What I lack in the political arena is the cynicism and the inability to compromise that is so often present today. Instead, I can assure voters that my integrity and character provide a strong footing to serve them as a county legislator.”
