Ritchie Campbell might be the greatest prep basketball player in Western New York history.
I'm aware Christian Laettner, Cliff Robinson and Paul Harris also are from here, but Campbell held the WNY scoring record for 27 years. His 2,355 points for DeSales and Burgard were finally surpassed this winter by Dominick Welch, whose career at Cheektowaga began when he was in eighth grade.
Regardless your opinion of Campbell's place on WNY's all-time list, one cannot dispute his basketball talents were squandered.
Campbell joined "The Tim Graham Show" on Wednesday to explain what went tragically wrong. Booze. Drugs. A stolen car. A deadly gunshot fired into the neck of a woman he didn't know. A 17-year bit in the Cayuga Correctional Facility.
Campbell's life will be explored in an upcoming documentary, "Off the Glass." Co-executive producer Cory Haqq also was in-studio along with Daemen College basketball coach Mike MacDonald and co-host Joe Licata, who broke Campbell's three-point record, although Licata learns Campbell didn't have a three-point arc his freshman season.
The discussion elicited laughs and cracked voices. You can listen to both segments here:
