Batavia man charged with DWI after striking fire hydrant

A Town of Batavia man was arrested Tuesday after the car he was driving destroyed a fire hydrant, Genesee County Sheriff's deputies said.

John E. Jaszko Jr., 31, was charged with driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, refusal to take a breathalyzer test, driving to the left of pavement markings in a no passing zone and driving with inadequate headlights.

Deputies on patrol said they had observed just before 1 a.m. a fire hydrant that had been knocked over and lying by the side of Galloway Road in the Town of Batavia. Following fresh tire tracks in the snow, the deputies tracked the vehicle they believe was involved in the accident to Jaszko's  Kelsey Road residence. After a brief investigation, they determined that Jaszko had been driving the vehicle and was intoxicated at the time. He was arraigned in Batavia Town Court and released on his own recognizance.

Jaszko is scheduled to reappear in court at 1 p.m. April 11.
