Cheektowaga's Welch breaks WNY career scoring record in defeat

Western New York has a new all-time boys basketball career points leader.

His name is Dominick Welch.

The Cheektowaga senior eclipsed one of the area's most hallowed records as he broke the record of 2,355 set by 1990 Buffalo News Player of the Year Ritchie Campbell with a layup with 6 minutes, 12 seconds left in the third quarter.

He scored a game-high 45 during Cheektowaga's 74-64 loss to South Park in the Section VI Class A-2 semifinal.

Welch ends his five-year career with 2,376 points.

The game was stopped with Welch honored for his achievement with Campbell looking on from the stands.

Welch was fouled on the play and hit the free throw once play resumed. South Park led 44-34 at the time.

Welch scored 13 points of his team's 16 points during the opening quarter and had 18 at halftime.

He scored the first seven points (by either team) of the third quarter to set the mark.
