Buffalo is a big music town. Buffalo is also a big drinking town. Naturally, we make a big deal out of Mardi Gras around here, despite being some 1,300 miles north of New Orleans, the city of the event's birth, and not so coincidentally, the birthplace of American music.
Paris and New Orleans are the cities most strongly associated with the pre-Lenten carnival, but with the entirety of the Allentown district and beyond will be given over to a Buffalo-style celebration of the event, we might reasonably demand to be considered a distant third. Beginning at 5 p.m. Feb. 28, Mardi Gras in Buffalo will find 20 venues presenting live music, food and drinks galore, all for the price of a single $5 wristband, honored at all the venues.
Participants are: Duke's Bohemian Grove Bar (DBGB), Exchange on Allen, Allen Street Hardware Café, Mulligan's Brick Bar, The Old Pink, Allen Burger Venture (ABV), Frizzy's Gabriel's Gate, Colter Bay, Fat Bob's, the Twilight Room, Savoy, Snooty Fox Lounge, Q, Fugazi, Gypsy Parlor GBGB (Gypsy Bohemian Grove Bar in Expo Market), Giacobbi's Cucina Citta, Ulrich's 1868 Tavern, and the Cathode Ray. Partial proceeds are earmarked for donation to Autism Services Inc. of WNY.
