Canisius hockey makes it 15 in a row; playoffs are next

Canisius will head into the postseason on quite the roll.

The Golden Griffins extended the nation’s longest unbeaten streak to 15 games by defeating Mercyhurst, 4-0, in their Atlantic Hockey Association regular-season finale Thursday night at HarborCenter.

A crowd of 935 watched the nation’s leader in save percentage Charles Williams shine on Senior Night. He turned aside all 35 shots he faced in posting his fifth shutout of the season. He shares the NCAA lead in shutouts this season with four others, including Sabres prospect Cal Petersen of Notre Dame and former Williamsville North standout Parker Gahagen of Army West Point.

Williams now has a save percentage of .944 for the current first-place team in Atlantic Hockey.

The Griffs scored three times in the first period to chase Mercyhurst Brandon Wildung. Alex Jaeckle, Ryan Schmelzer (Williamsville East) and Cameron Heath scored during the opening 20 minutes. Jesse Pereira scored in the third period for Canisius (19-10-7, 18-4-6).

The Griffs have already secured a first-round playoff bye. They now wait to see if they earn a No. 1 seed as they currently have a three-point lead on Air Force, which hosts Sacred Heart in a two-game series beginning Friday night.

The Griffs, who are 12-0-3 during their impressive unbeaten streak, will host an Atlantic Hockey quarterfinal-round series the weekend of March 10-12 at HarborCenter.
