Niagara Falls man charged with DWI after crash injures other driver

NIAGARA FALLS - City police charged a 79th Street man with driving while intoxicated after a two-car rollover crash Tuesday afternoon that sent a woman to the hospital.

At about 3:45 p.m., an Oldsmobile Bravado driven by John T. Wheeler, 48, ran a stop sign on Edison Avenue and struck a Dodge Neon heading north on 72nd, according to a police report.

A police officer found Wheeler with bloody hands after he crawled out of the Oldsmobile that was on its roof. The driver of the Dodge complained of pain in her leg and chest and was taken to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, according to the report.

Wheeler, who received medical treatment at the scene, registered a blood-alcohol content of 0.17 percent during a breath test at police headquarters about 90 minutes after the crash, according to the police report. He was charged with DWI and failing to stop at a stop sign.
