The matchups for the 33rd Annual Super Sunday High School Club Hockey Championships, slated for Sunday at KeyBank Center, are set.
The tripleheader begins at noon with the Mixed school championship game between Dunkirk/Fredonia versus Iroquois. The 2 p.m. Small school championship pits Starpoint against St. Mary's. The event ends with the 4 p.m. Large school championship game between rivals Canisius and St. Joe's.
While not at KeyBank Center, hockey fans don't necessarily have to go home right away once the last game ends. That's because the girls Western New York Varsity Hockey Federation championship game between Williamsville and Frontier/Lake Shore/Orchard Park is slated for an 8 p.m. start Sunday across the street at HarborCenter.
The Western New York Boys Varsity Hockey Federation postseason championship games (Section VI Division I and II and Niagara Cup finals) take place Monday at KeyBank Center beginning at 4 p.m. The Niagara Cup matchup is already set as defending state Catholic champion St. Joe's faces old friend Canisius – the third straight year the rivals have met for the title.
The matchups for the Division I and II Section VI finals will be determined later Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
The Division I semifinals start at 6 p.m. Tuesday pitting defending champion Williamsville North against a Cinderella-team in Niagara Falls. Falls won just two league games during the regular season while playing in a division mostly with small schools but stunned No. 2 seed Orchard Park, 3-1. Patrick Sisler made 49 saves for a Wolverines team that scored three goals on 13 shots. Michael Olszewski had two of them for seventh-seeded Niagara Falls.
Williamsville North is the top seed and routed No. 8 Lockport, 12-0, in the quarters.
The other Division I semifinal has last year's runner-up Niagara Wheatfield, a No. 3 seed, facing fourth-seeded Lancaster at 8:30 p.m.
On Wednesday, the Section VI Division II semifinals take center stage at HarborCenter with top seed Williamsville East facing No. 7 West Seneca East at 6 p.m.. The Trojans of WSE surprised third-seeded Grand Island in the quarters. The 8:30 p.m. game has No. 2 Hamburg against fourth-seeded Kenmore West.
