Both the Buffalo State men's and women's hockey teams will be home this week to begin the State University of New York Athletic Conference playoffs.
Ranked No. 14 in the nation among Division III teams the Bengals men (17-7-1, 9-6-1 SUNYAC) will be home as the No. 4 seed against No. 5 Fredonia at 7 p.m. tonight. Fredonia was 1-0-1 against Buffalo State this season, winning 4-2 on the road and playing a 1-1 tie in Fredonia.
Buffalo State goalie Mike DeLaVergne leads the conference with a 9.31 save percentage and is second with a 1.84 goals-against average. Freshman Anthony Passero leads t he team with 9 goals, 19 assists for 29 points.
No. 3 Geneseo will host No. 6 Brockport in Wednesday's other men's quarterfinal. No. 1 seed Oswego and No. 2 Plattsburgh await to host the semifinal games on Saturday.
The Buffalo State women, seeded third, will host No. 6 Potsdam on Thursday night in a SUNYAC quarterfinal. The Bengals (16-7-1, 11-6-1 SUNYAC) closed their regular season with a 3-3 tie with Plattsburgh, ranked No. 1 in the nation. Erin Gehen (West Seneca West) has 18 goals and 28 points in 25 games to lead Buffalo State. A junior, Gehen is second in Bengals history with 76 career points. Goalie Justine Silva has a 1.77 goals-against average and a .930 save percentage.
No. 4 Utica will host No. 5 Oswego in Thursday's other semifinal. Plattsburgh and No. 2 Oswego await to host the quarterfinal winners. The highest remaining seed will host the conference championship game on March 4.
