Beer news: A craft beer app, plus new beers

New from Thin Man

Thin Man Brewery (492 Elmwood Ave.) is releasing two new beers on Feb. 24. Oat No You Didn’t is a double IPA with oats. At 9.2 percent ABV, the beer features Chinook, Mosaic and Cascade hops, yielding notes of grapefruit, pine and oranges. The second beer is another strong one - a 9 percent ABV Belgian brown ale called Hyperballad. Look for notes of plum, raisins, toffee and some warming alcohol. Call 923-4100.

An app for craft beer fans

The New York State Brewers Association has released a new app for iPhone and Android users, called New York Craft Beer. The app allows users to check into beers they are drinking, view information about nearby breweries, events, brewery tours and more. Users can also manage their “passport,” allowing them to receive “stamps” whenever they visit a participating New York State craft brewery.

New from CBW

Community Beer Works (15 Lafayette Ave.) is releasing its latest beer on Feb. 23. Dubbed R3 Resistance! Raw Rye Pale ale, the 5.1 percent alcohol by volume beer is a pale ale brewed with rye as part of the brewery’s “West Meets East” series. It includes local ingredients from Niagara Malting (Cambria) and Whipple Brothers hop farm (Kendall, N.Y.), as well as raw rye grain from the Hudson Valley. This beer was brewed at Rare Form Brewery in Troy. A second collaboration between the two breweries is planned. Call 759-4677.

Special cask at Pan-Am

The Pan-American Grill & Brewery (391 Washington St.) is tapping a cask at 4 p.m. Feb. 24. This cask is a special version of the brewery’s house IPA, Terminiator, dosed with fresh grapefruit. It is named for Rocco Termini, who helped to renovate the Lafayette Hotel, in which the Pan-American Grill & Brewery resides. The cask will be available until it kicks. Call 856-0062.
