Mercy Flight takes skier, snowboarder to ECMC minutes apart

A pair of early evening skiing accidents at Holiday Valley on Saturday sent two trauma victims to Erie County Medical Center by helicopter, just 15 minutes apart.

A 17-year-old male skiier from Pennsylvania "went over a bump" and crashed on a slope at the popular ski resort in Ellicottville at about 5:15 p.m., causing a possible concussion. He was transported by Mercy Flight to ECMC and released later that night after an evaluation, according to Holiday Valley marketing director Jane Eshbaugh.

Then, at 5:30 p.m., a 29-year-old snowboarder, also a Pennsylvania man, fell on the slope, suffering a head injury with a concussion and possible internal injuries. Emergency responders came by ambulance but called in Mercy Flight again, Eshbaugh said.

She said the second victim is still at ECMC, but is recovering in the hospital and is expected to be fine.

The accidents and victims are not related.
