Pregame Prep: UB men shoot for sixth straight vs. Miami

Pregame Prep

Miami Ohio at UB

3:30 p.m. at Alumni Arena

Radio 1520

Records: UB 14-12, 8-5. Miami 10-16, 3-10

The Set-Up: UB goes for its sixth straight win and aims to remain the top four of the Mid-American Conference standing with five games to go in the regular season. UB and Ohio are tied for the second best record. UB lost to Ohio in the teams' first meeting. Ball State (7-6) is fourth. UB holds the tie-breaker edge over Ball State.

The Matchup: UB is the No. 1 rebounding team in the MAC. Miami is the last-ranked rebounding team. UB is No. 2 and No. 57 in the nation in offensive rebounding. Miami is 12th (last) in defensive rebounding. UB is third in scoring (80.1) points a game and has averaged 89.8 in its five-game win streak. Miami is 11th in scoring (70.2 ppg). Miami's offense runs through freshman guard Michael Weathers (No.24), who averages 16.8 ppg. He has taken the seventh most shots in the MAC. He's athletic and can get to the rim. His fraternal twin, Marcus, is a 6-5 freshman on the team who averages 10.0 points and 5.8 rebounds. Those two were top recruits out of Kansas who led their team (Shawnee Mission North) to its first high school state title since 1953 last year. UB needs to protect the ball. The RedHawks are tied for third in the MAC in forcing turnovers. UB senior Blake Hamilton is seventh in the MAC in scoring (16.7), 11th in rebounding (6.4) and fifth in assists (4.4). Miami is young. It has no seniors and seven freshmen on scholarship.

First meeting: UB blew a 16-point first half lead and lost at Oxford, Ohio, 75-74, on Jan. 24. Marcus Weathers scored 18 and Michael Weathers had 16. Oxford can be a tough place to play because the arena lacks energy. Miami has the second-lowest attendance in the MAC (an average of 1,475). Miami upset high-scoring Central Michigan in Oxford last week.

UB Women: The first game of the double-header at 1 p.m. features the UB women vs. Akron. UB (17-7, 7-6) stands seventh in the MAC but still have a chance to move up with a strong finish over the last five games of the regular season. Akron is 9-15 and 2-11.
