Some southtowns residents began seeing a familiar sight in their mailboxes Friday.
The Hamburg Sun, now produced by The Buffalo News, is back in circulation after its previous owner declared bankruptcy last year. A free, four-week trial will be mailed to residents in Hamburg, Lake View, Blasdell and Eden. After that, the paper will be available by subscription.
The newspaper traces its roots to 1875, with the founding of the Erie County Independent. But owner Community Papers of Western New York folded in July, and the paper was put up for auction along with several other Pennysaver and Sun papers. The Buffalo News acquired the Hamburg Sun and several other properties at auction, and reintroduced the PennySaver & News to several Southern Tier communities, including Gowanda, Ellicottville and Springville.
