Cheektowaga's Dominick Welch is among the seven finalists for the state's Mr. Basketball honor, which is award to the top senior by the Basketball Coaches Association of New York.
Welch entered Thursday night's game against Depew 100 points shy of breaking the Western New York all-time scholastic points record of 2,355 set by Ritchie Campbell nearly 27 years ago.
Welch, a returning All-Western New York first team selection, is currently averaging 28.8 points per game and 12 rebounds for a Warriors team that has played a tough schedule. Cheektowaga (12-7, 10-1 in ECIC III) is one win away from earning a share of its first division title since 1963 with Welch having a big hand in the team's success.
Welch is one of three players not from the New York City area to make the list. The list of nominees includes a name that should be familiar to followers of Canisius High School basketball: Albany Academy's Hameir Wright.
His team faced Canisius the past two seasons at the state Federation Tournament of Champions – ending the Crusaders' title reign last March en route to leading Albany Academy to the title and earning Class A Federation Tournament MVP honors.
Other nominees include Georgia Tech commit Jose Alvarado (Christ the King), Elijah Buchanan (Mount St. Michael), Gregory Calixte (Mount Vernon), Tyler Lamport (South Kortright) and Isaiah Washington (St. Raymond's).
BCANY also announced its Miss New York State Basketball finalists, but the group of six did not include anyone from Western New York.
Winners will be announced next month.
