Grand Island School District alerts parents about stranger

Grand Island schools Superintendent Brian Graham issued a community safety alert to the district Wednesday after learning that a female middle school student had been approached by an older male who attempted to call her over to his vehicle Tuesday afternoon.

The incident happened around 5 p.m. - not on the student's way to or from school - in the Oak Ridge Road neighborhood and was reported to police, said Graham.

The older man was driving a blue Toyota van and approached a female student from that neighborhood, according to the report.

"This is really just to allow the community to recognize that there was a stranger danger yesterday," Graham told the Buffalo News on Wednesday. "The child was safe and there was no attempt at a kidnapping. It was a person trying to talk to a female child and we thought it was important to let the community know and be vigilant. And to remind children about stranger danger and to contact the police if they see anything suspicious."
