What to watch for Friday
1. Boys basketball - Park at St. Francis, 6:30 p.m.
The common theme among games the past couple weeks has been league rematches. Well, there might not be a bigger one than tonight's Monsignor Martin game between No. 1 large school St. Francis (16-4, 9-1) and No. 3 large school Park (14-3, 8-2).
The Red Raiders rallied from a 41-22 halftime deficit to shock then-No. 1 Park in a 70-66 double overtime thriller on Jan. 18. Sophomore Juice Cunningham led the winners with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while juniors Bo Sireika and Devon Darrell also scored in double figures with 14 a piece. Park sophomore Daniel Scott scored a game-high 19 and junior Brandon Smith added 18.
St. Francis, with its lone league loss coming at Canisius on Jan. 12, is atop the ultra-competitive Monsignor Martin Association. Park dropped a 59-58 overtime game last Friday at Bishop Timon-St. Jude, which also has a league record of 8-2.
2. Girls hockey - NYSPHSAA Semifinals at SUNY Canton
Section VI champion Orchard Park/Frontier/Lake Shore (16-3-1) heads upstate to SUNY Canton to take on Section VII's Beekmantown (14-5) in the state semifinals at 8 p.m.
FLOP ended Kenmore/Grand Island's five-year run as Section VI champion with a 3-2 win on Wednesday. The game was tied, 1-1, after two periods. Jessica Peters scored the go-ahead goal and Mary Kroner added some insurance before Ken/GI pulled back within one late.
The other semifinal game features III-Skaneateles and X-Potsdam at 6 p.m. The championship game is set for Saturday at 1 p.m.
3. Boys basketball - Grand Island at Lockport, 6:30 p.m.
Five teams, all with three or four losses, still have a shot at at least a share of the Niagara Frontier League boys basketball title. No. 7 large school Lockport (14-4, 10-3) and Grand Island (13-5, 8-4) are two of those teams still in the hunt.
Lockport is up in the season series after a 64-46 win at Grand Island on Jan. 6. The Lions are 6-2 in the league since then, including their last five in a row. The Vikings have fallen behind with back-to-back losses against division contenders Kenmore West and Niagara Falls.
This is the last game of the regular season for the Lions. The Vikings have one more against Kenmore East next Wednesday.
4. Boys hockey - West Seneca East vs. West Seneca West, 5:30 p.m.
West Seneca West (12-3) may sit above West Seneca East (9-5-0-1) in the Division 3 rankings, but it was East that ran away with a 6-1 win when these two teams met on Jan. 16. The crosstown rivals play again at West Seneca Ice Rink tonight.
Dominic Khoury, Cameron Mentel, Cameron Bauer and Matt Benaquist each had a goal and an assist for the Trojans in the win over West. Goaltender Jagger Maving was impressive stopping 39 of the 40 shots he faced. Parker Leemer was the only Indian to get one past Maving.
5. Girls basketball - Kenmore East at Kenmore West, 5:30 p.m.
No. 7 large school Kenmore East (16-2, 12-0) looks to remain unbeaten in Niagara Frontier League play when it heads to crosstown rival Kenmore West (8-9, 7-5) this evening.
The Bulldogs defended their home court with a convincing 66-49 win over the Blue Devils on Jan. 6. East's Serena Sordetto led all scorers with 29 points, while teammate Kendall Mills added 20. West's Emma Pfohl and Anna Quinlan each scored a team-high 15 points. Pfohl had a double-double with 10 rebounds and also added five steals.
East lost to Orchard Park in its first game of the season and lost at St. Mary's of Lancaster on Dec. 22. The Bulldogs have won 11 in a row since. West's three-game winning streak was snapped last Friday in a 28-26 loss at Grand Island.
