No snow means no Winterfest in Williamsville this year

A mid-winter warm-up means the Winterfest in Williamsville scheduled for Sunday afternoon has been canceled, village officials said Wednesday.

The event held annually since at least the 1990s is "a long-standing tradition in the village, a fun event in February when everything's frozen," said Maggie Hamilton, the village's director of community development. "A lot of people look forward to it every year."

Sponsored by the village's Youth & Recreation Committee, Winterfest this year was to feature sledding, a snow sculpture competition, bonfires and hot chocolate at the sledding hill in Glen Park.

But rain Tuesday melted all the snow and Sunday's forecast calls for a high of 44 degrees and 90 percent chance of rain.

Also, volunteers are needed for future village events and are asked to call Village Hall at 632-4120.

"We always need more volunteers and we're especially light right now," Hamilton said.
