Probation officers deserve coverage if hurt on the job
Erie County probation officers encounter many of the dangers faced by the police. Probation officers have faced armed individuals and been injured by resistive subjects, attacked by pit bulls and exposed to used hypodermics and fentanyl.
Probation officers are issued ballistics vests, firearms, tasers and pepper spray. However, they do not have the financial security of coverage under General Municipal Law 207C that is provided to police and corrections officers for an on-the-job injury. Legislation sponsored by State Sen. Patrick Gallivan to correct this situation is pending in Albany. It deserves the support of the Western New York state delegation.
