Niagara Falls man tells police he was shot trying to buy marijuana

NIAGARA FALLS - A man shot in the back Thursday night told police he was trying to buy marijuana but started running away when "he knew something wasn't right."

The victim, identified as Steffon D. Dickerson, of 20th Street, gave police two different locations where the shooting happened, according to a city police report made public on Monday. Officers responded to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, where Dickerson had been taken in a private vehicle.

He told police he was inside a vehicle waiting to buy the marijuana when one or two other vehicles pulled up. He said he was shot while he was running away, according to the report. Dickerson initially told police the shooting happened on Ninth Street, then said it happened near 19th and Niagara streets, the report said.

Niagara Falls police have determined the shooting happened on the 400 block of Ninth, said Niagara Falls Chief of Detectives Kelly J. Rizzo.

Dickerson was listed in stable condition on Thursday night and was being transported to Erie County Medical Center for further treatment. An updated condition could not immediately be obtained Monday.
