The Buffalo Bills have hired veteran coach and former NFL player Gill Byrd as their new defensive backs coach, The News has learned.
Byrd, 55, began his coaching career as an assistant defensive backs coach for the St. Louis Rams in 2005.
In 2006, he became a defensive quality control coach for the Chicago Bears. A year later, he became assistant defensive backs coach and, in 2008, he was named assistant defensive backs/safeties coach.
The Bears fired Byrd in 2013. He spent the 2014 season as cornerbacks coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who let him go after the 2015 season.
After a standout career at San Jose State, Byrd played cornerback for the San Diego Chargers from 1983 to 1992. He was a two-time Pro Bowl selection. The Chargers inducted him into their Hall of Fame in 1998.
One of Byrd's sons, Jairus, played safety for the Bills from 2009 to 2013. He was a three-time Pro Bowler.
