One of this year’s more memorable Super Bowl commercials was a teaser for “Ghost in the Shell,” starring Scarlett Johansson in a remake of the Japanese anime classic . The remake looks intriguing, but you can catch the original at 9:30 p.m. Feb. 7 (the subtitled version) and Feb. 8 (an English language version) at the North Park Theatre (1428 Hertel Ave.).
“Ghost” is screening as part of the North Park’s “Neon Fever” series of sci-fi-tinged cult classics. Director Mamoru Oshii’s 1995 film is set in a future world of interconnected bodies -- yes, “The Matrix” owes “Ghost in the Shell” a major debt -- and is centered on the hunt for a mysterious hacker.
One of the most influential anime films ever made, “Ghost” is as visually stunning and technologically impressive today as it was two decades ago. Will the remake seem stale by comparison? Audiences will find out when it’s released on March 31.
Tickets are $9.75 (box office, northparktheatre.org).
