Alfred University linebacker A.J. LiCata will receiver the Jay Berwanger D-III Player of the Year award as the annual Eastern College Football Awards Banquet on Feb. 23 at MetLife Stadium.
The selection was made by the Eastern College Athletic Conference and the Metropolitan New York Football Writers.
LiCata has received several honors since helping Alfred reach the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III playoffs. Among them are: American Football Coaches Association Division III All-America team first team defense, ECAC North All-Star first team, Empire 8 Conference defensive player of the year and a first team all-conference selection and COSIDA Academic All-District 3 team. Also, he was one of 10 finalists for the Gagliardi Trophy that recognizes excellence in Division III football.
LiCata, who is from Lake View and is a Frontier graduate, will be among 12 individuals who will receive awards at the banquet, including Ithaca College coach Mike Welch, who will receive the Jim Butterfield DIII Coach of the Year Award, named in honor of the longtime Ithaca coach who preceded Welch.
Also at the banquet, the Alfred team will received the Lambert Division III Cup for the second time in Saxons history and first since Alex Yunevich was coach in 1971.
