Homeroom Announcements: Saturday's big games & more

We know there's no homeroom today. But we're up and ready to go.

Get yourself ready for today's #PrepTalkLive action with everything you need to know about the day ahead in high school sports.

What to watch for Saturday

1. Boys basketball - Battle at the Border at Niagara Falls

St. Joe's vs. Notre Dame Welland (Ont.) - 1 p.m.

The quadruple-header at Niagara Falls starts with St. Joe's (7-9) and Notre Dame Welland. The Marauders picked up one of their top wins of the season on Thursday, topping Dominick Welch and Cheektowaga, 55-53. They also beat Lockport and Kenmore West.

Niagara-Wheatfield vs. St. Francis (Ont.) - 2:30 p.m.

Wheatfield (5-12) is coming off a 53-44 loss to Kenmore East yesterday. Jeager Martino scored a team-high 15 points, while eighth-grader Jalen Bradberry added 13, nine from beyond the arc.

St. Francis beat Nichols, 68-43, in the Can-Am Shootout at Niagara Falls back in November.

V-Aquinas vs. St. Paul (Ont.) - 4 p.m.

Aquinas takes on St. Paul in the only game not involving Western New York competition. The Little Irish beat Williamsville South on Thursday with a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Jason Hawkes. St. Paul also played in the Can-Am Shootout, losing to East and winning against Niagara Catholic.

Niagara Falls vs. Sir Allen MacNab (Ont.) - 5:30 p.m.

The headliner of the Battle at the Border features the host Wolverines (10-8) and Sir Allen MacNab. Niagara Falls is still a contender in Class AA, but the reigning sectional champs have taken a step back from last year's 18-6 season. The Wolverines haven't won or lost more than two games in a row this year.

2. Boys hockey - Niagara-Wheatfield vs. Orchard Park, 6:45 p.m.

Division 1 contenders Niagara-Wheatfield (8-5) and Orchard Park (9-2-1-1) meet at Niagara University in the top hockey game of the day.

The Falcons look to snap a three-game losing streak but are one of the few teams to beat OP this season. They battled back from a 2-0 first-period deficit to score a 3-2 overtime win on Jan. 8. Chace Woods tied the game with six seconds left on a penalty shot, and Nick Peters scored the game-winner in overtime on the power play to complete the comeback. Woods (10 goals, eight assists) and Peters (six goals, 11 assists) lead Wheatfield in points.

The Quakers lost their second regulation game this season yesterday to Williamsville North, 2-1. Eric Lyon scored the lone goal for OP with 1:39 left in the third period to make it 2-1, but they weren't able to tie it up in the time remaining. The loss dropped OP to third in Division 1 but still four points ahead of Wheatfield in the standings.
