The last time the Sabres waived a fourth-line center, Derek Grant got claimed. Buffalo will find out if the same thing happens with Cal O’Reilly.
The Sabres placed O’Reilly on waivers Thursday. The other NHL teams have until noon Friday to claim him. If not, he is eligible to return to Rochester.
O’Reilly had played in seven straight games with the Sabres but was announced as a healthy scratch for Thursday’s visit by the New York Rangers. The center has no goals, one assist and a minus-6 rating in 11 games with the Sabres this season.
O’Reilly’s latest stint with the Sabres started Jan. 16, a week after Nashville claimed Grant.
