FUTIA, Leo R.
FUTIA - Leo R. Family and many friends mourn the loss of Leo R. Futia, who passed away on January 23, 2017 at the age of 97. Mr. Futia grew up in Buffalo, NY and received his B.A. there from Canisius College. He earned an M.B.A. from the Wharton School of Finance soon after. At the outbreak of World War II, he volunteered for military service in the U.S. Coast Guard. He saw action in the Pacific during the Aleutian Campaign and was honorably discharged with the rank of lieutenant in 1945. After his wartime service, he resumed his career as an agent with the Guardian Life Insurance Company. He spent the rest of his insurance career at the Guardian in a number of field and Home Office leadership roles and retired as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer in 1984. Mr. Futia served on the Guardian Board of Directors until 2009. Mr. Futia took on the responsibilities of Guardian's CEO role at a time of great economic and industry challenges. Under his leadership, Guardian made key strategic decisions and investments that initiated a two-decade period of unprecedented growth. Mr. Futia was widely respected for his business acumen, sharp communication skills and steadfast integrity. His self effacing manner and genuine humility set an example for anyone aspiring to leadership. But he was much more than this. He believed that education was the key which unlocked the door to personal and business achievement. With this in mind, he was an active supporter of his alma mater, Canisius College, which awarded him an honorary doctorate in May 2009. Mr. Futia resided in Greenwich, CT and is survived by his wife, Marie, children Carl Futia, Leo J. Futia, Mary Rumiesz, Elaine Cosantino and Ann Marie Winsch and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mr. Futia was predeceased by his son Charles Futia.
