Greater Buffalo Youth Orchestra plans Romantic concert

The Greater Buffalo Youth Orchestra and its music director, Ansgarius Aylward, has planned a far-reaching program for Feb. 12.

A promising Hamburg bassist, Michael Zogaib, will be the soloist in the first movement of a concerto by Giovanni Bottesini. Bottesini, a 19th-century Italian composer, was a double bass virtuoso.

Also on the program is "Symphonic Metamorphosis" by Paul Hindemith, a composer who spent some time in Buffalo. Two romantic masterpieces round out the program. One is Mendelssohn's "Italian" Symphony. The other is Wagner's luminous "Siegfried's Rhine Journey."

The Greater Buffalo Youth Orchestra is the premier youth orchestra of Western New York and includes musicians from 20 school districts. Aylward, the assistant concertmaster of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, is the music director for the 2016-2017 season.

The concert takes place at 3 p.m. Feb. 12 at Lippes Concert Hall in Slee Hall on UB's North Campus. Tickets are available at the door. Call 649-4023.
