No functional smoke detectors found in Niagara Falls house where man died in fire

NIAGARA FALLS - The house where a man died in a fire Tuesday night had no working smoke detectors, Niagara Falls Fire Prevention Chief Michael Winker said Wednesday.

Authorities haven't released the name of the man found dead after the blaze at 204 74th St. City property records indicate the owner of the home is David C. Guarino.

Firefighters were called to the 1 1/2-story home off Buffalo Avenue near Perry Avenue just after 8 p.m. Investigators believe the fire started in the kitchen in the rear of the first floor. The man, who was the only person at home at the time, was found in the upstairs of the bungalow, Winker said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
