Buffalo Bandits players help library kick off winter reading challenge

The Buffalo & Erie County Library System this week kicked off its new winter reading challenge, with the theme “Hello Winter, Welcome Books,” with help from Buffalo Bandits lacrosse players Ryan Benesch and Mitch Jones.

Students from Bennett Park Montessori School joined Benesch, Jones and the library system’s Reada Book Owl mascot for the Thursday announcement in the downtown Central Library.

Readers of all ages are encouraged from now through March 17 to get a book, read it and then log a short book review on the Library System website, buffalolib.org. The more books one reads, the greater the odds of winning a winter reading prize. One winner will randomly be selected at each of the 37 branch libraries in categories for children/teens, classrooms, and adults.

“The world is at your fingertips when you read books,” Library Director Mary Jean Jakubowski told the attendees. “You can learn about sports, history, music, even the weather ... anything under the sun by reading.”

Branches also will participate next Saturday in “Take Your Child to the Library Day.” Visit the calendar on the website or call 858-8900 for more information on a related event nearest you.
