Routine traffic stop spills the beans on Walmart shoplifting spree

TOWN OF LOCKPORT – Niagara County Sheriff’s deputies sniffed out a shoplifting caper during a routine traffic stop about 4 p.m. Thursday on Robinson Road.

Deputies said they became suspicious by the movements of a passenger, who confessed to stealing an item from the Walmart on nearby South Transit Road and then gave deputies permission to search the car. Deputies said they recovered two sealed bottles of Tylenol from beneath the passenger’s seat, makeup and birdseed.

The passenger, Nancy M. Mercado, 49, of Robinson was charged with petit larceny.

The driver, Wilfredo Nieves-Hernandez, 56, of the same address, was charged with sixth-degree conspiracy. Deputies who returned to the Walmart store said they viewed surveillance video of Nieves-Hernandez accompanying Mercado on the shoplifting spree.
