You can celebrate new year hiking Jan. 1 in state parks

It’s time to get up and take a brisk walk to celebrate the new year in one of the area’s New York State Parks, with special First Day Hikes planned Jan. 1 at three sites in Niagara County.

Programs begin at 11 a.m. Jan. 1 at DeVeaux Woods State Park with a walk through an old-growth woods to the Niagara Gorge Rim Trail to see the whirlpools and rapids. The hike will end at 12:30 p.m.

Park naturalists will also lead a hike along the Niagara River from 2 to 3 p.m. at Fort Niagara State Park in Youngstown. Participants will see a War of 1812 cemetery, view a lighthouse and see where prisoners of war were held during WWII. Visitors may also stop in the Officer’s Club on the park grounds, from 1:30 to 4 p.m., to see museum displays. Old Fort Niagara is closed for the holiday.

And, finally, walkers will view Niagara Falls from 1 to 3 p.m. at Niagara Falls State Park. Park naturalists will have plenty of stories to tell along the hike in America’s oldest state park.

To register for any of these hikes, call 282-5154.
