Letter: Illegal street racing is not ‘drag racing’

Illegal street racing is not ‘drag racing’

A Dec. 15 headline in The News, “Drag racer sent to prison in death, injury to riders,” tarnishes the sport of drag racing.

A drag race is when two cars have a speed contest against each other on a sanctioned drag strip. There is insurance, medical personnel and safety rules that must be followed regarding the vehicles, drivers and equipment, such as seat belts and helmets. Even the popular “Street Outlaws” show has a disclaimer that states that street racing is dangerous and illegal.

As the drag racing program and race director at Lancaster National Speedway & Dragway, I beg all illegal street racers to bring it to the track! You can race your car or motorcycle and have fun in a safe environment doing so.
