Two drivers identified in Monday's head-on collision in Sardinia

The drivers who suffered serious injuries in a two-vehicle, head-on crash Monday morning on Route 39 in Sardinia were identified Tuesday as Rebecca Ryan, 19, and Jean Sprague, 61, both of Sardinia. the Erie County Sheriff's Office reported.

Shortly before 9:30 a.m., investigators said, Ryan was driving east on Route 39 near Pratham Road when her vehicle crossed over into the westbound lane and struck an oncoming car, driven by Sprague.

Both drivers were taken to Erie County Medical Center.

Ryan "suffered multiple lower body injuries" and underwent surgery Monday. Sprauge "regained consciousness at ECMC and was being examined for possible head and internal injuries Monday, sheriff's officials said.

The women remained hospitalized in serious condition Tuesday. The incident was under investigation by the sheriff's Crash Investigation Unit.
