The State Police will be sending letters to pistol permit holders regarding the permit renewal process under the state's SAFE Act, according to the Erie County Clerk's Office.
Letters will be sent to individuals who received permits prior to Jan. 31, 2013. Those permits must be renewed or they would be lost.
This follows news that the state hasn't yet set up a website required under the law for those individuals to recertify their permit.
Notified permit holders will have until Jan. 31, 2018, to submit their renewal form. State Police will follow up with the permit holder if there are any discrepancies between the information provided and what was already on file, the clerk's office said.
In a statement issued last week, the State Police said the agency was close to implementing a renewal process that would be able to be completed by mail or online.
The renewal requirement applies only to handguns, not long guns. For more information about the SAFE Act, visit safeact.ny.gov or call 1 (855) LAW-GUNS.
