Alfred University junior linebacker A.J. LiCata of Lake View (Frontier) was a first team selection for the American Football Coaches Divison III All-America team announced Monday.
LiCata finished the season with 153 tackles, just one off the Saxons' single-season record, as he stood out during a 12-1 season. Alfred won more games than any season in its football history before losing to perennial power Mount Union (Ohio) in the semifinal round of the NCAA Division III Championship.
Previously, LiCata was named first team Empire 8 Conference All-Star and conference Defensive Player of the Year, Eastern College Athletic Conference North Defensive Player of the year and first team All-Star and D3football.com North Region first team All-Star. Also, he is one of 10 semifinalists for the Gagliardi Trophy presented annually for the most outstanding player in Division III nationally.
He is a finance major at Alfred with a 3.61 cumulative GPA (grade point average) and received Academic All-District recognition from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
