Three Buffalo State football players charged in Rees Street vandalism

Three SUNY Buffalo State football players have been charged with criminal mischief in connection with the vandalism of a house on Rees Street near the campus over the weekend.

Police on Thursday identified those charged as Ryan Bauer, 20; Stephen Smaldone, 20; and Jordan Rychcik, 18.

Around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, at least four windows were smashed by players using golf clubs, Buffalo police spokesman Michael J. DeGeorge said. Police on Monday said more than a half-dozen individuals were involved, all of whom were believed to be Buff State football players.

According to the school's football roster, Bauer is a junior offensive lineman from North Massapequa; Smaldone is a junior offensive lineman from Wantagh; and Rychcik is a freshman defensive back from Stillwater.

Buffalo State issued a written statement on the players being charged.

“I am extremely disappointed," Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Jerry Boyes said in a statement. "The actions described in the Buffalo Police report do not reflect the values of our football program or the college. The student-athletes charged in this incident will be suspended from the team while the investigation continues. If found guilty, the student-athletes would be subject to additional discipline per team rules or removal from the program.”
