Alfred hosts Mount Union in NCAA football playoff

The Alfred University football team try to continue its progress in the NCAA Division III tournament when it hosts the University of Mount Union on Saturday. Kickoff is at noon at Yunevich Stadium.

Alfred is unbeaten with a 12-0 record. The Saxons defeated Western New England in a second-round game last week. Mount Union (11-1) defeated Johns Hopkins to advance.

Alfred is ranked 14th in the country. It won the Empire 8 Conference title and set a school record for wins in a season. The Saxons have averaged 431 yards of offense per game.

Junior linebacker A.J. LiCata (Frontier) is a big part of an Alfred defense that has allowed just 304 yards per game. LiCata has 140 tackles on the season, 11 1/2 for loss, and 4 1/2 sacks.

Western New Yorkers on the roster include Eric Graham (Maryvale), Chuck Martin (Olean), Jared Watkins (Cleveland Hill), Brady Collver (Frewsburg), Maleke Fuentes (Olean), Miguel Alicea (Dunkirk), Marcus Ford (Maryvale), Kwaine Davis (Maryvale), Jon Rowe (St. Mary’s), Sean Murphy (Bishop Timon), Tyler Tanevski (Orchard Park), Brandon Parker (Orchard Park), Wes Senn (Randolph), Tyler Jansen (Cardinal O’Hara), Michael Kelleher (Maryvale), and Andrew Doricko (Niagara Wheatfield).
