The University at Buffalo is approaching its women’s basketball record for most consecutive wins to start a season as it gets ready to face UCF (University of Central Florida) Thursday night in Alumni Arena (Radio 1520, 7 p.m.).
The Bulls will be attempting to go 6-0 for the second straight season when they face the Knights, who figure to be a dangerous opponent with their 6-1 record. The best start in UB women’s basketball history was 8-0 by the 2000-01 team.
Five of the UCF victories have been by 12 points or more. The loss was to Virginia Tech (67-64). Zykira Lewis (14.7) and Ndeye "Fifi" Ndour (10.9), a 6-foot-1 player from Senegal, are the UCF scoring leaders, although neither started the Knights’ most recent game against Austin Peay, a 61-43 victory.
Senior JoAnna Smith (11.6) leads UB in scoring, but the Bulls’ have been a deep and well-balanced team so far. Five different players have led the team in scoring in the first five games. The UB bench has accounted for 44.6 percent of the team’s scoring so far. One constant has been junior guard Stephanie Reid, who has led or share the team lead in assists in each of the five games.
UB defeated UCF, 66-60, in Orlando, Fla., last season.
