Niagara hockey loses on the road

Niagara’s offense stayed in a bit of a funk on Saturday night, and goalie Jacob Teichroeb wasn’t able to bail his teammates out this time.

As a result, American International skated away with a 3-1 win over the visiting Purple Eagles. Niagara fell to a 2-9-3 overall record, 2-4-2 in Atlantic Hockey. The Yellow Jackets improved to 3-5-6, 3-4-5 in Atlantic Hockey.

Teichroeb was coming off two consecutive shutouts, but it took AIC less than a period to end that streak. Nicholas Luca scored at 18:54 to put the Yellow Jackets up. Austin Orszulak made it 2-0 for AIC in the second period, and Martin Mellberg increased the American International lead early in the third.

Niagara only replied once, finally getting on the scoreboard on a goal by Stanislav Dzakhov with 6:16 left. Alex Murray of the Yellow Jackets did the rest, as he finished an excellent weekend in goal.

The game featured 17 power plays; Niagara went 1 for 9 with the man advantage.

The Purple Eagles return home to Dwyer Arena next weekend. They play RIT on Friday and Saturday nights. The two games are Niagara’s last home games in 2016.
