LOCKPORT – Jacqueline E. DeCarlo, a registered nurse in Lockport for more than 30 years, was appointed to a vacant Niagara County coroner seat Tuesday.
The County Legislature unanimously accepted a search committee's recommendation of DeCarlo, who starts work in the $17,500-a-year part-time post Wednesday.
DeCarlo succeeds Kenneth V. Lederhouse, who held the District 3 seat for 31 years until retiring Oct. 31.
"It seems most jobs I've had are on call 24-7, so it's something I'm used to," DeCarlo said.
She worked for 30 years at Eastern Niagara Hospital, 25 of them in the emergency room, before joining PrimeCare Medical, the company which provides medical care to County Jail inmates, last year. She will continue to hold that job.
Legislator William J. Collins, R-Lockport, who chaired the search committee, said DeCarlo was chosen from a field of eight applicants. "We thought she was the best fit for the job. She was caring, compassionate and showed a lot of professionalism," Collins said.
DeCarlo's appointment lasts until the end of 2017. An election for a full four-year term will be held next November, and DeCarlo said she expects to run as the Republican candidate.
