Rush-hour motorists on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning that are commuting between the Southtowns and downtown Buffalo will need to find an alternative route away from the lake shore.
Lackawanna Police reported that the Hamburg Turnpike (Route 5) is expected to remain closed to traffic in both directions for "at least 24 hours" as the result of the massive industrial fire at the Steel Works Industrial Park in the former Bethlehem Steel complex at the corner of Route 5 and Lincoln Avenue in the city. Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz tweeted from the scene that Route 5 will remain closed through Thursday afternoon.
TRAFFIC WARNING: Route 5 will be closed between Lake Ave. in Hamburg and Tifft Street in Buffalo through tomorrow afternoon due to the fire.

Police suggest Southtowns-bound motorists and those heading to KeyBank Center for the Sabres game, which is set to start at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, to seek alternative routes, including South Park Avenue, McKinley Parkway, Abbott Road or the New York State Thruway.
The roadway closed down to traffic from Ridge Road to Lake Avenue in Blasdell about 8 a.m. Wednesday after the fire broke out.
It has remained closed all day.
