Police disclose Hamlin Park school burglary

Police released details Saturday on a Wednesday burglary at School 74, the Hamlin Park Claude and Ouida Clapp Academy, where surveillance video recorded some of the crime and a school employee saw the burglar fleeing in a car.

Northeast District police said a male burglar used a pick to get through the main door of the school at 126 Donaldson Road about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. The pick was left at the scene and is being tested for DNA, police said.

The intruder damaged the doors to two classrooms, the principal's office and the cafeteria, where he stole an unknown amount of money from the cash register. Two desks also were damaged.

A school employee said there were two vehicles parked outside the school, one with its motor running, and the one in which the burglar apparently fled was last seen heading south on Wohlers Avenue.

The burglar is described as wearing a navy blue cap, a black coat with gray shoulders, a Army green hoodie outlined in white, safety glasses, gray pants and dark shows with white soles.
