NIAGARA FALLS – A man arrested Friday afternoon in the theft of a car also is a suspect in a house fire earlier in the day, police said.
Melik Hubbard, 30, of Greenview Terrace is charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, with other charges pending, police said.
Police said they went to the 2900 block of Greenview Friday morning in search of a man wanted on outstanding warrants. Though unable to locate the suspect, they were called back to the same address just before noon after a man was seen leaving the house carrying garbage bags full of items. Moments later, neighbors noticed smoke pouring from the home. The fire caused an estimated $50,000 in damage.
About 1:20 p.m., a 2005 Mercury parked outside the Corner Store at 20th Street and Centre Avenue was stolen. Police said they tracked the car to the 800 block of Lincoln Place, where they arrested Hubbard.
