Welch gives up hockey coaching job at Nichols

Scott Welch has informed The Buffalo News that he has stepped down as girls’ hockey coach at Nichols.

Welch said he recently started a new job in the medical field that will make it difficult for him to devote the time necessary to coach the often nationally-ranked program he’s guided to 162 wins and multiple conference playoff championships the past six years.

“With the amount of travel (due to his job), it’s not fair to the kids,” said Welch, who led the Vikings to four North American Prep Hockey Association and three Conference of Independent Schools Athletic Association postseason championships during his tenure. “I am tremendously going to miss it. It’s been a wonderful experience.”

Welch, who will continue coaching an elite travel girls team with the Niagara Junior Purple Eagles Hockey Association, amassed a 162-33-20 record at Nichols. Between Nichols and the travel teams he has guided over the years, he coached 71 future college players – including 40 Nichols athletes who reached the Division I level.
