Longtime Niagara County coroner Kenneth Lederhouse resigns

LOCKPORT - Niagara County Coroner Kenneth V. Lederhouse, one of four elected coroners in the county, said Friday he is resigning, effective at the end of the day Monday.

"Thirty-one years of service," Lederhouse said when asked why he was stepping down. "Time to enjoy family and retire."

Lederhouse, 63, is a City of Lockport Republican. He has served District 3, which includes the City of Lockport and the towns of Lockport, Royalton, Hartland and Somerset.

County Legislature Clerk Mary Jo Tamburlin said the county has posted a notice on its website seeking applications for a Legislature appointment to succeed Lederhouse. The deadline to postmark resumes is Nov. 5, and the person the Legislature chooses will be able to serve until the end of 2017, Tamburlin said. An election for a full four-year term will be held in November 2017.

Coroners need not live in the district in which they are elected. The part-time position pays $17,500 a year.
