Ronald R. Spadone, who served as Lackawanna City Council president from 2003 to 2007, died Thursday in Mercy Hospital. He was 79.
Born in Buffalo, he was a graduate of Seneca Vocational High School and Erie County Technical Institute. He also served in the Army and was stationed in Germany.
Mr. Spadone had a 41-year career with Alro Specialty Metals, where he was a tool steel salesman. He retired in 1988.
He began his career as a public official as a member of the Lackawanna Board of Education, serving from 1969 to 1979 and from 1982 to 1986, including a year as board president.
Mr. Spadone was elected 4th Ward Council member in 1992 and re-elected in 1996 and 2000.
As Council president, he helped develop a system for regular replacement of police vehicles and Public Works Department trucks and eliminated health insurance for part-time employees, including Council members.
Mr. Spadone also was a Democratic committeeman for 50 years.
An avid gardener and sports enthusiast, he sponsored various sports teams.
His first wife of 14 years, Gracemary Priore Spadone, died in 1975. He married Anne Ginnetti in 1977.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons, John, David and Joseph; a daughter, JoAnn Tokasz; and six grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:30 a.m. today in Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 3148 Abbott Road, Orchard Park.
