Lakefront cottages destroyed in early-morning fire on Crystal Beach

FORT ERIE, Ont. – An early-morning fire on the Bay Beach property on Crystal Beach caused more than $2 million in damage after three lakefront cottages were destroyed and another was significantly damaged, according to the Fort Erie Fire Department.

The four cottages were located close together along the Lake Erie shore on Erie Road near Eastwood Avenue, and their proximity allowed the fire to spread, said Fort Erie Fire Chief Larry Coplen.

The fire was reported at about 3 a.m. Monday. Firefighters were able to stop the blaze from spreading to two other nearby buildings, Coplen said.

"There could have been more, quite a bit more" that were damaged, he said.

Early estimates peg the damage at more than $2 million.

No one was inside any of the structures at the time of the fire, the cause of which is under investigation.
