The snowstorm that became known as the October Surprise struck the night of Oct. 12, 2006, and affected Western New Yorkers for days after. The heavy snow brought down hundreds of thousands of trees, blocking roads and leaving area homes and businesses without heat and electricity for days. Efforts are still underway to "re-tree" the area. Buffalo News Photographers share files from the storm and the cleanup that followed.
