Trying to find that perfect Halloween costume

Wanna hear something scary? According to the National Retail Federation, Americans will spend - are you ready - a whopping $8.4 billion this Halloween with $3.1 billion on costumes alone. Crazy. And fun, I guess. I mean who doesn't love a few headstones on the front lawn mixed in nicely with some scarecrows, maybe a witch or two, and those must-have pumpkins.

It's all good fun. Until that is, you try and find the perfect costume for your preschooler. Last year, I think I bought three costumes for my daughter, Emma because she kept changing her mind. When we walked in Party City and looked at the wall of costumes, I was so happy that this year, we actually had a plan.

Ever since I took Emma to help me review "The Wizard of Oz" at Shea's, she knew what she wanted to be for Halloween. She hasn't budged either, and that was months ago. And because we are that family, my family will transform into the cast of "The Wizard of Oz" with Emma starring as Dorothy.

So, we have it easy this year. For those other parents, struggling with ideas here's something to consider. It seems, nationally speaking, the princesses have been dethroned as the most popular costume for children. Superheroes reign supreme this year. We're talking Superman, Wonder Woman, Captain America and other world-saving favorites. But, locally - it's a bit different. A bit of a surprise according to Party City sales associate, Litany Taylor.

"The most popular for us are the characters from 'PJ Masks.' We didn't expect it to be so popular. No one ordered enough so once the size is gone, it's gone." If you have little ones, you may know all too well about the tiny super hero kids that are part of the Disney Junior lineup. The three little cuties are just about sold out, Taylor said.

Obviously, our kids want to be what they want to be regardless of how popular the costume is. But, if you're curious, here is a list of the most popular costumers this year according to The National Retail Federation.

1 - Superhero

2- Princess

3- Animal (cat, dog, lion, monkey, etc.)

5- "Star Wars" characters

10- Spiderman

Oh, and if you're wondering - the top three pet costumes are pumpkin, hot dog and bumble bee.
